Luxury villa with stunning design
La Castellana is the masterpiece of a famous Italian interior designer. Its dramatic hillside setting, overlooking the famous rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, foreshadows the beauty of its interior. No wonder it has been featured in books and by the most renowned interior design magazines (House&Garden, Elle Décor, Coté Sud).
This L-shaped building was a ruin when the owner and her husband bought it. Luckily some old drawings, found in the local archives, could be taken as guideline, but for the rest they were given plenty of rope to style the house in their own very personal way, not limited by existing features, but armed with a huge knowledge of local architecture and contemporary design. The result is a balanced blend of old and new.
Located on top of a hill with a broad view over the Orcia valley (classified UNESCO World Heritage in 2004), Castellana is surrounded by 3 acres of landscaped garden. The terrraces for al fresco dining are paved with stones from the piazza in Arezzo, and offer unbelievable views over the Val d'Orcia. Adjoining is an outdoor oven and barbecue. There is a heated pool as well as a seperate hot tub for 6, again taking advantage of the views. The vegetable garden produces delicious fresh produce (vegetables, herbs and flowers) which guests are free to pick.
Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a/c, equivalent to a five star hotel. Professional full staff can be arranged. The cook Marcella is so highly regarded, that Maxine Clark, food writer and cook-book author, staged the photographs for her book Flavours of Tuscany at Castellana with Marcella hands on preparing Tuscan cuisine.

The Val d’Orcia is an enchanting and miraculously unspoilt valley in southern Tuscany, listed as UNESCO world heritage in 2004: hills outlined by endless rows of cypress trees, majestic castles, thermal spa towns, tiny medieval villages surrounded by olive groves and wine cellars everywhere full of oak and chestnut casks in which to age world class wine.
The village of Montalcino, home to the famous Brunello di Montalcino stands hilltop covered almost entirely with vineyards and at its centre signature examples of Medieval architecture: the Palazzo dei Priori and the wonderful Rocca fortress, built circa XIV century.
Pienza, not far from the estate, has been declared “Heritage of Mankind” by Unseco and is considered to be the “symbol city” of the Italian Renaissance (as well as famous for its wonderful pecorino cheese).
Montepulciano, in this same area is another charming village, known as the pearl of the 16th century and renowned for the production of wines such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Hot springs and spas: The closest spa is in Bagni San Filippo, 20 minutes by car. Other spas are in Chianciano Terme, a famous thermal spa town that dates back to Roman times, 20 minutes by car.
Tennis courts are in Chianciano Terme, 20 minutes by car.
Horseback riding facilities are in San Casciano dei Bagni, 40 minutes by car.
The closest city is Chiusi, 25 minutes by car.
Perugia, Siena and Assisi, 1 hour by car; Florence, 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. Pisa and Rome, 2 hours by car.
Train station: Florence and Rome can be reached by train in one and a half hours from the nearby train station at Chiusi.
Outlets: "Fashionistas" will be able to indulge their passion, especially in the famous Prada factory store, located on the road to Florence.

EXTRAS
- Pool heating (if required): If a higher temperature than the level provided by solar panel heating system is requested dedicated boilers can be switched on. Extra heating through dedicated boilers will be charged following real propane consumption at actual market price.
SECURITY DEPOSIT
EUR 2500, preferably through credit card pre-authorisation held by the agency. It will be returned 2 weeks after departure subject to deduction for damage caused and/or payment for additional services.
