    Overview

    A house with wonderful views

This elegant farmstead is located in the most coveted region of central Tuscany. Strategically positioned in the middle of the Golden Triangle - Florence, Siena, Pisa - the property sits on top of a hill, surrounded by 24 acres or vineyards, olive groves and woods with stunning landscape views.

The property consists of three buildings: the detached house Capanna Olivo offered here, the villa with tower of the property owner and adjecting to it a farmhouse that has been converted into four elegant guest apartments (Villa Olivo / also featured in our portfolio).

Capanna Olivo was once the barn of the estate that has been transformed into a lovely country house. It takes its name from the vast groves of olive trees that surround it in every direction, and will impress its guests: every window boasts an incomparable view of the surrounding landscape. Whether lying in bed or at the pool you will enjoy views of the gently rolling hills leading to the ancient towers of San Gimignano. The silver-grey of the olives blends with the dark green of cypresses, creating a spectacular show of colours. The surrounding landscape resembles the background of Renaissance paintings admired in the paintings of Leonardo, Botticelli and Benozzo Gozzoli.

The Capanna Olivo house looks out onto the panoramic valley to south-west and develops over two floors. It is equipped with all the necessary modern comfort including air conditioning (although you'll rarely need it, as the hilltop location allows for maximum circulation of Tuscan breezes). The interiour is an atmospheric ambience designed with loving care for details. The layout and the decoration were a project of the property owner Paola. She invested a lot of time and love in choosing the right marble, tiles and light fixtures for the kitchen and the bathrooms, and in finding the right material for the sofas and armchairs as well as having a few choice pieces of antique family furniture restored. Brava Paola!

Outside, there is a large terrace is wonderful for al fresco dining, and every day the sunset is the very special event. A private path leads to a magnificent Mediterranean style swimming pool with roman steps. The pool is conjointly used with the other guests. It is perfect for whiling away a summer afternoon with a book.

Capanna Olivo offers a lot of privacy: the house has a private access with its own entrance gate, a private parking, the private terrace and the private path which leads to the shared pool.

Capanna Olivo with sun pouring in through the French windows, its pastel colours and stunning views is the perfect place for an unforgettable vacation. Guests are free to stroll through the olive groves and adjacent vineyards, and sample the Chianti wines and olive oil produced by the nearby family-owned farm. The farm organises wine tastings free of charge in the wine cellar, and the recently awarded Super Tuscan wine is excellent.

At walking distance there are a family-owned Tuscan Restaurant (bring a torch if you like to walk - as the street is not illuminated), a mini-market and one of the oldest churches of the region. Just a few miles down the hill there is Certaldo Alto, the picturesque, walled medieval hilltop town renowned for being the birthplace of the poet and writer Giovanni Boccaccio, the author of "The Decameron".

In this region you can dine in one of the many local restaurants known for their delicious Tuscan food. In Certaldo the guests may attend music concerts und cultural festivals. For longer day trips and lovers of the Italian Renaissance, Florence, Volterra, Siena and Pisa are all within one hour by car.

The villa's location only 8 km from the railway station of Certaldo is a good base to visit Florence and Siena even without a car: You can park your car in Certaldo (parking next to the railway station) and take the train in both directions. During the week, trains to Florence/Siena and back go regularly (approx. every 1.5 or 2 hours). The train ride takes less than one hour. In Florence the train will take you to the main train station which is right in the centre of Florence - it is just a short walk from the station "Santa Maria Novella" to the Cathedral or the Uffizi. In Siena the railway station is located approx. 3 km from centre, and you have to take a bus to reach the old town on top of the hill. One hour of driving takes you to the sea.

Hosts and keeper could not be more gracious. Grounds immaculate. Location and accomodation better than pictures. Great base for day trips both to wine destinations, Florence, and day trips north and south.

    Wonderful!

I enyod my stay in Toskana very much, it was a wonderful week and I hope to return soon.

    Dear Ms Roehrig,

We would like to thank you very for your advise. We spent wonderful holidays in Villa Olivo thanks to the excellent accommodation, owner's hospitality and beautiful surroundings.

Our week at the Capanna just couldn't have been any better. The villa was totally reconstructed in 2004 and has stunning views of the entire countryside through the many oversized windows and glass doors. We stayed there with another couple and both of our second floor rooms had large opening windows with commanding views of distant hillside castles and vineyards. The villa is very clean, comfortable and very nicely decorated. The grounds are extensive and surrounded with well cared for roses, all kinds of flowering plants, trees and lawn. There is also a large swimming pool with shade cabanas on the lower terraced area. We planned on eating out most of the time, however, this place was too nice to leave. We picked up food at the local Coop and Bbq'd on three of our nights. On the final night, the gracious owner Paola, cooked us an excellent full course dinner that was served by her onsite manager, Silvia. And, during our stay Silvia was extremely helpful, assisting us whenever we had questions or needed help. Paola, her brother alessandro and their family own and operate the Tenuta Della Luia Winery, which is about a mile from the villa. Alessandro's son Johnny gave us a tour and tasting which we thoroughly enjoyed. The view from the winery is almost as spectacular as the one from the villa and we tasted their excellent wines while seated in their garden overlooking the valley. The wine was so good that we had a case shipped to our home in the us. I highly recommend Villa Campanna and all four of us hope to return in the next few years.

Heaven is a place on earth!
Left on Nov 12, 2011 for a stay in Nov 2011
Having a vacation in november, in an unknown place at first might be strange...I was looking for a peaceful and quite place to rest, to read, to relax.... and I found a piece of heaven surrounded by olive trees, cypresses and roses, overwhelmed by a great panorama...I enjoyed staying here every day, every minute....walking through the olive trees, smelling the roses... enjoying the sunny days... I feel reborn, Tuscany is such a beautiful region and its inhabitants are even more....Even the great Michelangelo had to be from Tuscany I would like to show my apreciation to the owner signora Paola who made a dream come true and to her manager Silvia for kindness and care I hope to come back here soon.... I would like to see this piece of heaven in every season because if in late fall was so special, so beautifull in spring or summer must be even more.

    Fantastic Tuscan Way of Living

Being Tuscans we know what Tuscany is like. So we can judge what thi place really is offering: The absolute Tuscan feeling like in "Decamerone". Capanna is the only place to live this feelings. You're put back into Renaissance with it's hilly landscape. The factory also produces excellent wines, as good as Supertuscans!

Every day I dream of our delicious 4 week stay at Capanna Olivo...My teenagers talk of our stay with the fondest of memories...The perfect landscape, the perfect location, and the most delighful owner Paula, and groundskeeper, Silvia ...I have reccomended this beautiful home to many friends and even have some staying this august!! It is more beautiful than any picture can suggest!

    Our visit was wonderful!
Thank you so much for helping making our trip so easy and enjoyable. We rented the Capanna villa at Villa Olivo the last week in March and it couldn't have been a more splendid place. We arrived after dark, and the next morning we were awestruck by the magnificent view we awoke to outside our windows. It was even better than we had dreamed. The location was perfect for day trips to Florence, Sienna, Pisa, the neighboring hill towns, and it wasn't even a bad drive to the Cinque Terra. The property owners were very friendly despite the slight language barrier, which we made the best of. The villa was furnished perfectly for a very comfortable stay, and we enjoyed every minute of it. If only we had more time to stay.
Please pass along our gratitude to the property owners and compliments on a magnificent place.

    Cara Paola,

    Activities

The villa is in the perfect location, just 40 minutes outside Florence. It overlooks a spectacular valley of vineyards, and the sunsets are amazing. In the morning, fog envelopes the valley floor, and the ancient towered city of San Gimignano rises on the opposite end of the valley, which you can see from the villa. A few minutes away is the small town of Certaldo, which has a modern grocery store and other shops.

The Chianti area: Famous for its wines - the Chianti Classico - this area of Tuscany has more than just world-class oenological pleasures to offer. The curious visitor will come accross many delightful villages, each of them with a history of its own. Let us simply mention lesser known gems such as the romanesque church of Sant'Appiano, the Basilica of Impruneta, the fortified castle of Monteriggioni and the roofless romanesque abbey of San Galgano which are all close. And don’t miss the Saturday market in the small town of Greve.

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometers outside the town. The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, grown in the area.

Florence: The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

Siena: The Sienese have no doubt, their town is the most beautiful in all of Tuscany, if not all of Italy. Siena has remained a Gothic city. Renaissance, one of the major influences in Florence, hardly affected the urban development of Siena. The city unfolds around the main shell-shaped square called "Il Campo." Twice a year the famous horse race known as the "Palio" takes place here. The narrow streets are lined with old shops and small cafes, while churches and museums are real treasures of the fourteenth century.

Restaurants: eating out is a way of getting to know the area. Simple local trattorias rub their shoulders with more sophisticated restaurants specialised in refined cuisine. Fresh local produce allways plays the leading role.

Local craftsmanship: hand-made terracotta pots from Impruneta, hand painted pottery from Montelupo, mouth-blown crystal glass from the neighbouring village Colle Val d'Elsa, not to mention the south bank of the Arno river in Florence where you will find a multitude of craftsmen working silver, leather, wood, glass, paper and metal.

Sports: riding stable 5 km, tennis court 10 km, beauty spa with sauna 15 km, golf course 35 km.
