The true understated elegance of Tuscany
This exclusive castle, owned by one of the oldest families of Italy, lies fourteen kilometres west of Siena. It is within easy reach of such cultural gems as Florence, San Gimignano, Volterra and the Chianti area. Lucca, Pisa and Arezzo are about one and a half hours by car and Perugia, Orvieto and Assisi are equally easy day trips.
The estate has the quality that dreams are made of. A castle with turrets surrounded by a formal garden, a Renaissance chapel and a beautifully converted conservatory - the Limoneto - look accross the valley towards the skyline of Siena, surrounded by 250 hectares of private land.
This Castello is one of Italy's best kept secrets as it is not open to the public, but those fortunate enough to go there are invariably awed by the sheer elegance of its interiors and the mystique that surrounds the place which has not surprisingly been featured in a number of books and publications on the beauties of Tuscany.
The true beauty of the estate lies in its silence and the spectacular view over the surrounding countryside, at a stone's throw from the magical city of Siena, a landscape that has not changed for centuries ...
The former Limoneto, so called because it was a conservatory where lemon trees in terracotta vases were kept in winter, has recently been restored and furnished with an exquisite sense of harmony, space and comfort. The Limoneto house can be seen on the aerial photo/see photo gallery: building with pool in front of the house. The pool is for the exclusive use of guests. There is also a tennis court on the premises.
Activities and places of interest
The sleepy hill-top village of Sovicille is just a ten minute drive from the house. At the centre of the charming main square is a fountain and there are just three tables in front of the bar which doubles as the village food store, a perfect spot for the morning cappuccino before you venture out on sightseeing tours or more serious shopping at the weekly markets in the neighboring villages. Siena can be reached in 20 minutes, Montalcino in 30 minutes, Arezzo and Pienza in 45 minutes, Florence in 1 hour, Lucca and Porto Ercole in 1.5 hours and Pisa in 2 hours.
Siena: The Sienese have no doubt, their town is the most beautiful in all of Tuscany, if not all of Italy. Siena has remained a Gothic city. Renaissance, one of the major influences in Florence, hardly affected the urban development of Siena. The city unfolds around the main shell-shaped square called "Il Campo." Twice a year the famous horse race known as the "Palio" takes place here. The narrow streets are lined with old shops and small cafes, while churches and museums are real treasures of the fourteenth century.
Florence: The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
The abbey and the monastery of San Galgano are at a 30 minute drive from the house. This highly romantic location, the abbey has no roof and grass instead of a floor, is used for concerts in summer.
Guided tour of Siena: We are paticularly happy to be able to suggest an excellent guide Mrs. Vittoria who is also a friend of the owner of Limoneto. She will take you on a tour of Siena covering the most famous locations, ending up at the Duomo. The tour will take a max. of 3 hours, special interests can be discussed at the beginning. A light lunch in Vittorias beautiful home before the tour is an extra option which ads a further personal touch to the experience.
In house massage: Mrs. Gigliola, who has worked at the famous spa Spadeus in Tuscany, will come to the Limoneto upon request on Monday and/or Fridays mornings. Her specialities are Ayurvedic massage with essential oils, Cranio sacral therapy and Reflexology.
