    Overview

The true understated elegance of Tuscany

This exclusive castle, owned by one of the oldest families of Italy, lies fourteen kilometres west of Siena. It is within easy reach of such cultural gems as Florence, San Gimignano, Volterra and the Chianti area. Lucca, Pisa and Arezzo are about one and a half hours by car and Perugia, Orvieto and Assisi are equally easy day trips.

The estate has the quality that dreams are made of. A castle with turrets surrounded by a formal garden, a Renaissance chapel and a beautifully converted conservatory - the Limoneto - look accross the valley towards the skyline of Siena, surrounded by 250 hectares of private land.

This Castello is one of Italy's best kept secrets as it is not open to the public, but those fortunate enough to go there are invariably awed by the sheer elegance of its interiors and the mystique that surrounds the place which has not surprisingly been featured in a number of books and publications on the beauties of Tuscany.

The true beauty of the estate lies in its silence and the spectacular view over the surrounding countryside, at a stone's throw from the magical city of Siena, a landscape that has not changed for centuries ...

The former Limoneto, so called because it was a conservatory where lemon trees in terracotta vases were kept in winter, has recently been restored and furnished with an exquisite sense of harmony, space and comfort. The Limoneto house can be seen on the aerial photo/see photo gallery: building with pool in front of the house. The pool is for the exclusive use of guests. There is also a tennis court on the premises.

Staff, service and other pleasant surprises

    ARRIVAL
You will be welcomed by the housekeeper who has lived on the estate for years and who knows everything about taking care of guests. She will show you around the house and garden and answer any questions.
The house is equipped with underfloor heating which is included in the rent. In colder seasons the house will be comfortably heated for your arrival.
The housekeeper will have prepared typically Tuscan refreshments for you on arrival: fresh bread, local salami and tomatoes fresh from the vegetable garden on the estate as well as a bottle of the famous Brolio wine and mineral water.
The house provides a directory of local services as well as suggestions for eating out, shopping, sight-seeing etc.

    SERVICES
The housekeeper will come in on Monday to Saturday for five hours a day. She will clean and tidy the house and if necessary she can also shop and prepare a meal.
The gardener will come early in the morning to water the plants and do any necessary upkeep in the garden. He will also clean the pool and tidy any outdoor areas and garden furniture.
The house is fully equipped with a TV, CD-stereo, telephone and fax. There is a selection of CDs and DVDs in the house. Your computer can be connected to the telephone socket for use of Internet.
The private swimming pool is seven by fourteen metres large. It lies in a terraced area with a magnificent view, surrounded by irrigated lawns. It is open from May 15th until September 30th.
There is a tennis court on the premises to which guests of Limoneto have free access.
Car park for two or three cars with automatic illumination.

    SERVICE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST
The larder can be stocked with the basics upon arrival.
After a long trip, guests might welcome a typically Tuscan meal on arrival with an antipasto according to the season, a freshly made pasta dish, salad, cheese and a dessert, with of course red wine and mineral water. The table will be laid under the pergola or in the dining room.
We will suggest a choice of restaurants in the immediate vicinity. However, the housekeeper is an excellent cook and is only too willing to prepare meals. For special occasions, a chef can come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice.
We can arrange for a chauffeur-driven car to collect you at the airport and reaccompany you upon departure as well as a rented car to await you at Limoneto.

The sleepy hill-top village of Sovicille is just a ten minute drive from the house. At the centre of the charming main square is a fountain and there are just three tables in front of the bar which doubles as the village food store, a perfect spot for the morning cappuccino before you venture out on sightseeing tours or more serious shopping at the weekly markets in the neighboring villages. Siena can be reached in 20 minutes, Montalcino in 30 minutes, Arezzo and Pienza in 45 minutes, Florence in 1 hour, Lucca and Porto Ercole in 1.5 hours and Pisa in 2 hours.

Siena: The Sienese have no doubt, their town is the most beautiful in all of Tuscany, if not all of Italy. Siena has remained a Gothic city. Renaissance, one of the major influences in Florence, hardly affected the urban development of Siena. The city unfolds around the main shell-shaped square called "Il Campo." Twice a year the famous horse race known as the "Palio" takes place here. The narrow streets are lined with old shops and small cafes, while churches and museums are real treasures of the fourteenth century.

Florence: The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

The abbey and the monastery of San Galgano are at a 30 minute drive from the house. This highly romantic location, the abbey has no roof and grass instead of a floor, is used for concerts in summer.

In house massage: Mrs. Gigliola, who has worked at the famous spa Spadeus in Tuscany, will come to the Limoneto upon request on Monday and/or Fridays mornings. Her specialities are Ayurvedic massage with essential oils, Cranio sacral therapy and Reflexology.
