Castle of the Four Towers
|
A Gothic castle near Siena
Art lovers can begin their journey right here.
This medieval castle, dating back to the early 14th century, was built
(just like all of Siena!) with red brick. The castle has a square ground
plan with four corner towers, and a wonderful inner court is hidden behind
the portal with its pointed arches.
Above the portal there is a projection from which hot oil was poured in
former times to ward off the enemy. What is nowadays the mail box was
originally an embrasure which protected the archers.
From then on the castle has been in private hands and it is now inhabited by the family of the owner. The building is in excellent condition and well preserved, and the ministry of culture has identified it as one of the most beautiful national monuments.
The castle offers a total of 4 accommodations: Those who prefer to have an accomodation with breakfast might prefer other two unique apartments on the top floor of the castle Minisuite or Il Leone. Furthermore there are two self-catering apartments, one of which offered here and the Casa Castello apartment. The rest of the house is privately used.
The large living room area, with a fireplace, a long wooden table and a sleeping sofa for 2 people, forms the centre of the apartment. From here you enter directly into the small kitchen, which is located in one of the towers. The double bedroom can be prepared as twin bedded room, which has to be indicated when booking. Furthermore there is a bathroom with shower. Antique terracotta tiles cover the floor displaying charming unevenness, and mighty wooden beams support the ceilings. The apartment is furnished with several antique pieces of furniture and equipped with a washing machine and a dishwasher for your convenience. All windows offer a view of the soft hilly landscape around Siena.
Here you live, you see, in an olive grove, far away from the bustle of the cities. You will get a good night's sleep here! This accommodation is - considering the prices in town - reasonably priced and also very favourable
regarding its central location. It is only 3 km to the Piazza del Campo.
You can reach Siena even without a car. There is a bus-stop 1.3 km away (bus-stop Due Ponti/30 minutes walking). During the day buses go to the centre
every 15 minutes and every 30 minutes in the evening. A grocery shop is at 1.3 km and a pizzeria/restaurant at 1 km. Just by the way - the property owner can prepare dinners for you during your stay (please request menu and price on site). There is an open-air
swimming pool 5 km away, and the beautiful white sandy beaches of the
Maremma can be reached within about one hour.

The Castle of the Four Towers, situated on a green hill, surrounded by
vineyards and olive groves, is a pleasant place to stay near Siena. As a
guest here, you have access to the garden, enjoy a great view, reach the
town quickly, and you'll take pleasure in a good night's sleep in a castle.
Could you imagine a better place to stay?
Originally the castle
was built as a fortress of the Republic of Siena and was involved in the
battles fought between Siena, ruled by the Guelfi family, and Florence,
dominated by the Ghibellini family.
After the fall of the Sienese Republic in 1555 - when it was of minor
importance to the military - the castle was primarily used as a private
residence.
The interior of the castle can be accessed through a huge wooden portal. Across the small and romantic courtyard, 14
stairs provide access to the upper floor. The apartment is furnished and designed in harmony with the historic ambience: you won't find the
blatantly imposing and luxurious elegance of the feudal (Baroque) castles
that were built later on, but rather a comfortable rural interior - in line
with the history of this castle that dates back to the Middle Ages.
The castle is surrounded by a garden boasting lawns, some beds of roses and
trimmed hedges. This garden can be used by the guests and is perfect for
having breakfast or a barbecue and for sunbathing in the olive grove. The
Castello produces its own wine and olive oil - you can
buy these products right on the premises.
